Job Description
A Senior/Staff Product Engineer is needed for Wise's Risk & Control Governance group within the Risk Assessment Group, based in London. The group works at the intersection of Risk API, Product and FinCrime. The aim is to give Wise assurance in each risk assessment it performs across its scale, and this engineer is expected to make the platform more trustworthy and sound.
Four themes dominate. Data governance means owning and tracing data and monitoring its quality, so every risk call relies on dependable inputs. Control assurance means continuous checks that verify controls work as designed, catching drift, validating triggers, measuring coverage and grading control health. Auditability means end-to-end audit trails, histories of changes and explainability tools that let teams produce regulatory evidence on demand. Scale means high-throughput tooling that can cover many risk areas.
The first job is to create assurance and governance foundations the platform does not yet offer. Each control must prove it fired the correct trigger, had the necessary data, reached the correct outcome and still performs. Early projects include data quality checks and lineage, automated monitoring that flags errors before they turn into incidents, and audit tooling that cuts the effort needed for regulatory reporting. Joint work with the Risk API group on shared contracts and integration points is also part of the role.
The profile needs a history of building high-volume, data-rich backend applications, regardless of language. Working knowledge of Kafka and of both SQL and NoSQL storage is expected, along with a systems mindset for spotting failure patterns and keeping designs robust and simple to run. Some data engineering experience, such as quality frameworks or lineage, is desirable. The person should be comfortable turning broad goals into tasks and aligning interfaces with Risk API, Product and FinCrime teams.
Responsibilities
- Set up owner tracking, lineage mapping and quality checks behind risk decisions
- Build continuous monitoring that validates control effectiveness and detects drift
- Deliver audit trails, change histories and explainability tooling for regulators
- Integrate governance capabilities with the Risk API team's platform
- Scale solutions across several risk domains
Requirements
- Experience building data-intensive backend services that handle high volumes
- Working knowledge of Kafka and of SQL and NoSQL stores
- Systems thinking about failure modes in distributed systems
- Self-direction: turns broad goals into concrete work and sees it through
- Collaborative approach with Risk API, Product and FinCrime teams
- Data engineering aptitude, covering data-quality tooling, pipeline scheduling and provenance tracing
