Job Description

Robinhood is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join its Data Platform organization. Operating at the intersection of modern technology and the financial sector, the company builds systems designed to make financial services accessible to a broader audience. This position is suited for experienced technical leaders who excel at designing complex distributed infrastructure and guiding architectural strategies across multiple engineering teams.

The Data Platform group manages the complete lifecycle of data processing, ranging from low-latency order paths to batch and near real-time analytics. The organization functions across three core pillars: storage solutions such as PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and caching mechanisms; streaming infrastructure for real-time events; and data lakes utilizing Delta Lake for ingestion and compute workloads. In this capacity, the engineer will act as a technical leader across the entire department, designing large-scale distributed systems like database sharding, proxy routing architectures, and change data capture pipelines. Candidates will spearhead zero-to-one initiatives, shape long-term platform roadmaps, and collaborate with engineering leaders to optimize system reliability, performance, and scalability.

This position requires working out of the Bellevue, Washington office with an in-person attendance schedule of at least three days per week. Robinhood maintains an intentional, collaborative office environment equipped with catered meals, events, and supportive workspaces to foster high-performing teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architectural direction across storage, streaming, and data lake platforms handling transactional, real-time, and analytical workloads
  • Design and guide the implementation of distributed systems including database sharding, proxy-based query routing, and real-time event processing pipelines
  • Evolve streaming and ingestion systems toward near real-time processing goals to improve data freshness and latency
  • Partner with engineering leaders and teams to define platform strategy, align roadmaps, and fulfill reliability, scalability, and performance requirements
  • Drive zero-to-one initiatives introducing next-generation streaming, change data capture, and data processing systems

Requirements

  • Possess extensive experience building and scaling distributed systems
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in at least two areas: storage systems, streaming platforms, or large-scale data processing and data lakes
  • Show a strong understanding of database systems such as PostgreSQL or DynamoDB, including replication, sharding, and performance optimization
  • Have experience with streaming and event-driven architectures utilizing technologies like Kafka or Flink
  • Display familiarity with modern compute engines and data platforms such as Spark or Delta Lake
  • Prove the ability to lead complex technical initiatives, establish long-term architecture, and collaborate across multiple teams
  • Work from the Bellevue, Washington office at least three days per week
