Zoox is building a ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle fleet along with the supporting ecosystem designed to deliver next-generation urban mobility-as-a-service. The organization is currently seeking a Senior or Staff Software Engineer to join its internal agentic platform team in a hybrid capacity. In this position, you will operate as a technical lead for the end-to-end integration of a tool-centric agent runtime. Your responsibilities include connecting this runtime with internal and external agent clients, line of business backends, scheduled or interactive workloads, and cloud operations. You will translate security and architecture goals into stable tool contracts, repeatable releases, and testable integration milestones.
This role suits an experienced engineer who excels at bridging product surfaces, platform services, and upstream systems to resolve complex issues at boundaries. Success in this position is measured by reliable HTTP tool call paths, proper scoping and authentication, clear cross-functional ownership, and environment parity spanning development through production. Responsibilities
- Own and lead integration strategy and execution across shared libraries, hosted services, standardized tool protocols, REST APIs, and diverse callers
- Drive cross-functional delivery alongside backend API teams, partner agent owners, security, SRE/platform, and program management
- Debug and root-cause complex system failures utilizing structured logs, distributed traces, metrics, and session-token behavior
- Produce durable mitigations and operational runbooks for integration issues
- Define and review integration artifacts such as contracts, allowlists, registry configurations, environment matrices, and interface assumptions
- Contribute to release gating by managing container image promotion, secrets posture, smoke paths, and disciplined branching or tagging
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Computer Science or a related technical field
- Minimum of 7 years of software engineering experience with a strong background in integration, platform, or backend roles
- Strong proficiency in Python including production services, asynchronous I/O, and automated testing
- Experience working within a large monorepo utilizing CI-driven delivery
- Deep practical experience with HTTP integration encompassing REST, JSON-RPC, TLS, and debugging under load
- Experience shipping services on Kubernetes covering deployments, health checks, and troubleshooting
- Authentication integration experience including bearer tokens, JWT validation, OAuth2, OIDC, enterprise SSO concepts, and least-privilege scoping
Qualifications
- Exposure to Model Context Protocol or alternative industry and internal agent tool-calling and orchestration models
- Observability-led integration habits featuring metrics, traces, structured logging, and basic SLO or dashboard thinking
- Background in security-sensitive integrations involving data minimization, external partner access, and review cycles with security or compliance teams
