Job Description

Gusto is looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to act as a Technical Lead within its Money Group in San Francisco. The employer builds a platform focused on payroll, health insurance, retirement plans, and HR for small businesses across the United States. In this hybrid role, you will guide technical strategy across multiple engineering pods, help shape financial infrastructure systems, and contribute to scaling products related to consumer and business financial health.

This position involves a mix of strategic planning and hands-on execution. You will oversee service extraction from a large monolith, evaluate external partners, build early prototypes, and mentor other engineers. The group encompasses sub-teams working on business financial services, consumer financial tools, automated tax credits, and payments infrastructure.

The role is suited for experienced engineers who thrive in fast-moving environments and have a background in regulated financial technologies. Team members are expected to engage with AI tools relevant to their responsibilities. Gusto operates physical office spaces and requires employees based near those locations to work from the office on designated days.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical direction across multiple pods within the Money Group and support delivery aligned with long-term goals
  • Establish the technical vision for domain areas and manage shorter-term projects
  • Contribute to the architecture connecting the People Stack and Finance Stack
  • Guide service migration away from a large Ruby-on-Rails monolith toward a service-oriented architecture
  • Evaluate external vendors and lead technical due diligence
  • Create prototypes and proof-of-concepts to de-risk ideas and inform product decisions
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, and Operations teams
  • Drive AI-native architecture decisions including LLM-driven transaction categorization and tax optimization
  • Act as a technical consultant for internal teams to maintain architectural coherence
  • Mentor fellow engineers and support the growth of senior and staff team members

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • Hands-on background building financial infrastructure within a regulated environment such as account management, money movement, card systems, or lending
  • Proven history of scaling and operating large, interconnected production systems
  • Experience driving multi-quarter architectural initiatives across one or more teams
  • Demonstrated ability to own team-level OKRs and contribute to technical strategy
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools
  • Availability for hybrid work from the San Francisco office on designated days
