Zoox is seeking a Senior or Staff Software Engineer to join their team on a hybrid schedule. The company is building an entirely custom, fully autonomous vehicle fleet and an accompanying ecosystem designed to deliver urban mobility-as-a-service. Operating at the intersection of machine learning, design, and robotics, Zoox requires engineering talent to scale and develop the cloud services and APIs powering its commercial robotaxi platform.
In this position, the professional will focus on backend architectures responsible for handling fleet dispatch, routing, transaction payments, mobile application interfaces, telemetry telemetry data, and operational metrics. The ideal candidate brings extensive background in cloud-based software development and a strong capability for designing and operating backend microservices that drive production-level systems.
Responsibilities include architecting robust backend components, taking ownership of key system features like payments and dispatch, and helping shape technical roadmaps and execution plans. The role suits engineers dedicated to maintaining high standards through thorough code and design reviews, comprehensive testing, and clear documentation.
Responsibilities
- Design and construct scalable, high-performance backend systems supporting the robotaxi platform
- Take ownership of critical system features including payments, fleet dispatch, and service management
- Contribute significantly to technical roadmaps and development plans while executing them successfully
- Promote engineering excellence by establishing best practices in design reviews, testing, documentation, and code reviews
Requirements
- Minimum of eight years of cloud software development experience
- Demonstrated experience operating and optimizing production-grade systems for resilience and efficiency
- Extensive background in designing, implementing, and running backend microservices
- Proficiency in SQL, REST APIs, and either Java or Kotlin
- Experience managing production services utilizing cloud infrastructure tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Spring Boot microservice architectures, PostgreSQL, and Elasticsearch
- Prior background in sectors such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, logistics, or transportation
- Experience working with event-driven architectures and Kafka
