Job Description

Zoox is building a ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle fleet and a supporting ecosystem aimed at delivering mobility-as-a-service within urban areas. Operating at the intersection of machine learning, design, and robotics, the organization seeks talented individuals to join its execution-oriented team. The System Design and Mission Assurance group is instrumental to this mission, building safety cases and fail-operational designs prior to launching robotaxis on public roads.

The company is hiring a Sensing and Perception System Safety Engineer to conduct safety evaluations on intricate hardware and software platforms, with a specific focus on sensing and perception networks. This position suits an engineer experienced in mission-critical systems who wants to bridge software and hardware domains. The professional in this role will define subsystem safety requirements, lead cross-functional technical projects, and design protective mechanisms utilizing established industry standards.

Daily work involves collaborating closely with hardware, software, firmware, and systems engineering units to formulate reliable next-generation architectures. Additionally, the engineer will review simulation and field data to pinpoint root causes, and apply artificial intelligence tools to streamline repetitive tasks. Candidates do not need to match every single listed expectation to apply, as the organization values a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Define safety requirements for sensing components including cameras, lidars, and radars, as well as perception subsystems like sensor fusion and machine learning models
  • Lead multidisciplinary technical projects involving Software, Hardware, Operations, Data Science, and Verification and Validation teams to gather necessary data for safety arguments
  • Partner with perception, hardware, software, firmware, and systems engineering departments to design protective mechanisms using ISO 26262 and SOTIF ISO 21448 standards
  • Collaborate with partner groups to build safe, fail-operational, and cost-efficient next-generation sensing architectures and guide sensor selection
  • Analyze field and simulation data to determine root causes of issues, establish next steps, and test assumptions
  • Utilize artificial intelligence and large language model tools to accelerate data analysis and automate recurring tasks

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in a technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or Mechatronics
  • Bring experience as a Design or Systems Engineer working on complex or mission-critical systems featuring high fail-operational redundancy, particularly within sensing and perception
  • Possess at least three years of hands-on systems, safety, or related engineering background focused on evaluating safety-critical high-integrity systems within the automotive, advanced driver assistance systems, autonomous vehicle, aerospace, or robotics sectors
  • Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills to explain intricate technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with sensing hardware, underlying physics, operational limitations, and tradeoffs in safety-critical applications and fail-operational systems
  • Practical background applying ISO 26262 functional safety and ISO 21448 SOTIF standards to level 2 plus advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles, including hazard analysis and functional decomposition
  • Proficiency with Python or Databricks for data mining, analysis, and visualization
  • Strong analytical capabilities regarding performance metric definitions and system-level trade-off analysis
  • Comprehension of modern perception stacks, machine learning and artificial intelligence systems, their requirements, and integration obstacles
  • Familiarity with requirements management platforms such as Polarion, DOORS, or Jama
