Job Description
GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps designed to boost developer productivity, enhance operational efficiency, and lower security and compliance risks for more than 50 million registered users. The company is currently looking for an Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer to join the Cells Infrastructure team within its Scale and Architecture organization in India. In this role, you will help build, provision, and maintain Cells, a critical architecture that enables GitLab.com to scale horizontally by dividing the platform into independent units behind a shared routing layer.
This is an end-to-end operational role where you will manage production reliability, configure global routing, execute ring-based deployments, and support tenant migrations. Ideal candidates possess solid experience running large-scale cloud infrastructure and distributed systems, alongside a strong foundation in site reliability engineering principles. Team members are expected to utilize artificial intelligence as a daily productivity multiplier and communicate asynchronously across distributed environments.
Responsibilities
- Manage production Cells by participating in on-call rotations, responding to incidents, conducting post-incident reviews, and implementing corrective actions
- Establish service level objectives for routing and cell health while creating associated dashboards, alerts, and runbooks
- Provision and administer cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services, covering Kubernetes, networking, object storage, PostgreSQL, Redis, and IAM
- Build infrastructure as code utilizing Terraform, Helm, and GitOps tools such as Argo CD
- Maintain and expand the global routing layer powered by Cloud Spanner, Envoy, Cloudflare Workers, and a Go service
- Enhance continuous integration and delivery pipelines for ring-based deployments, handling software promotion, database migrations, and rollbacks
- Assist with organizational tenant migrations by setting up destination cells, performing dry runs, and executing production cutovers
- Collaborate with product teams to adapt services for cell compatibility and author operational documentation
Requirements
- Professional background managing production infrastructure at scale on Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, or both, including Kubernetes
- Strong technical proficiency in Terraform and Helm
- Proficiency in Go or extensive experience in another systems language with a readiness to write Go daily
- Firm grounding in site reliability engineering methodologies such as service level objectives, error budgets, toil reduction, and capacity planning
- Demonstrated ownership of production services involving incident response, on-call duties, and monitoring via Prometheus and Grafana
- Understanding of progressive delivery concepts for safe fleet-wide changes and rollbacks
- Familiarity with distributed systems principles including request routing, failure domains, and data consistency
- Experience operating effectively within distributed, asynchronous, written-first remote teams
