Canonical, the publisher of the Ubuntu operating system, seeks a Software Engineer for Ceph & Distributed Storage to join its Cloud Engineering unit. The firm provides open-source software utilized in public cloud, AI, data science, IoT, and enterprise infrastructure. In this role, the professional will develop modeling software to manage systems like Kubernetes, OpenStack, and Ceph, concentrating specifically on distributed storage and Ceph. Daily duties involve authoring clean code in Python and Golang, collaborating with a decentralized workforce, resolving bugs, and shaping technical documentation for operator best practices.

This position suits individuals passionate about open source, distributed architecture, and software-defined datacenters. Candidates must be comfortable operating in a distributed environment without a traditional office base. The position entails international travel approximately two to four times annually, typically for one-week internal gatherings in various global locations. Canonical evaluates compensation based on geographic region, individual performance, and prior experience, reviewing pay structures annually alongside performance bonuses.

Responsibilities

  • Write maintainable and rigorously designed software in Python and Golang
  • Partner proactively with a globally distributed team
  • Debug software issues and deliver clean code corrections
  • Contribute to technical documentation establishing best practices for authoring quality operators
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate on effective engineering solutions
  • Develop and maintain software for the delivery, operations, and lifecycle management of Ceph storage

Requirements

  • Experience with writing modern, maintainable Python
  • Experience working with Ceph storage
  • Willingness to travel up to four times per year for internal events
  • Availability to work remotely within the EMEA or Americas regions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, a STEM field, or a related discipline
  • An exceptional academic track record from high school and university
  • Experience operating Ceph clusters in production
  • Experience with open source distributed storage systems such as Minio, Gluster, or Mayastor
  • Interest and experience in two or more of the following areas: Linux, Kubernetes, Public cloud, OpenStack, LXC/LXD, Python, Go, or Debian packaging
