Figma is hiring a Software Engineer - Developer Experience to join its Build Systems team. Figma provides a collaborative platform that assists teams with brainstorming, prototyping, translating designs into code, and real-time project iteration. The Build Systems group manages CI infrastructure, artifact repositories, merge queues, and test frameworks to help engineers deploy updates securely and efficiently.
This position suits an experienced technical leader who enjoys optimizing large monolithic codebases and scaling developer tools. In this capacity, you will steer the technical roadmap, mentor engineering peers, and create robust systems that boost productivity across the entire organization. You will collaborate closely with product developers, infrastructure groups, and leadership stakeholders.
This is a full-time position that can be performed out of any designated US hub or worked remotely within the United States. New hires will be required to attend in-person onboarding, and video interviews require candidates to keep their cameras enabled.
Responsibilities
- Guide the strategy and technical roadmap for the Build Systems division
- Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams to identify friction points and build scalable solutions
- Lead multi-quarter initiatives focused on decreasing testing times and raising continuous integration reliability
- Design and maintain distributed continuous integration platforms, build systems, and testing frameworks
- Construct and manage AWS infrastructure that supports the main build pipeline
- Provide technical mentorship, code reviews, and leadership to support team growth
- Communicate architectural decisions clearly to individual contributors and senior executives
- Research industry trends in developer tooling and integrate applicable technologies
Requirements
- Have at least five years of engineering experience, including a minimum of four years focused on Platform, Infrastructure, or Developer Experience teams
- Demonstrate deep expertise working with build systems such as Bazel, Buck, Pants, or Gradle and managing large-scale monorepos
- Show background in optimizing CI/CD pipelines, scaling developer tooling, and designing distributed systems
- Bring hands-on AWS experience along with proficiency in Infrastructure as Code and coding languages like Go, Python, Ruby, or TypeScript
- Display proven technical leadership in driving cross-team initiatives and communicating with various stakeholders
Qualifications
- Possess experience migrating massive codebases to modern build tools, particularly Bazel
- Have background in creating test frameworks and enhancing testing infrastructure
