Job Description
Zoox is building a purpose-built, fully autonomous vehicle fleet along with the supporting ecosystem to deliver urban mobility-as-service solutions. The Robot Software Infrastructure team at Zoox is currently hiring a Software Engineer - Embedded Linux Operating Systems to build and advance the shared operating platform that runs multiple devices on the Robotaxi, including onboard AI systems that execute Autonomy software. This hybrid role involves designing platform-level software and services, as well as handling custom operating systems designed to run hardware-accelerated workloads on automotive-grade hardware.
This position is well-suited for engineers who want to investigate broad problem spaces and understand how individual elements integrate into a larger system. The person in this position will work alongside cross-functional partners across hardware engineering, software development, release management, manufacturing, and operations to facilitate vehicle creation and scaled deployment.
Daily work focuses on creating and supporting the operating system platform, configuring embedded Linux build systems, and writing or optimizing kernel-space components and device drivers. Candidates should bring experience in production embedded software development and an understanding of Linux kernels, build frameworks, and bootloaders.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain the operating system platform powering on-bot applications and devices
- Configure and manage embedded Linux build systems such as Yocto alongside bootloader processes like U-Boot for reliable startup and maintenance
- Develop and optimize kernel-space components and device drivers in C, C++, or Rust
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate the OS platform, troubleshoot issues, and support hardware bring-up and manufacturing
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience delivering production embedded software
- Deep understanding of Linux, Yocto build systems, and U-Boot bootloaders
- Familiarity with Linux init systems including systemd, containerization concepts like chroot, cgroups, and Linux namespaces, and filesystems
- Knowledge of device drivers, kernel-space code, and a memory-management-free language like C or C++
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and bash
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
- Prior experience with embedded Linux inside a robotics environment
- Familiarity with security software including PKI, secure boot, OTA software updates, and hardware key storage
- 2+ years of experience delivering custom Embedded Linux operating systems
