Job Description

Affirm is hiring a Software Engineer II for its Online Storage team in Canada. The team runs managed databases as a platform for all Affirm services, including MySQL, DynamoDB, TiDB and Redis. The engineer will focus on Cache Services built on Redis and Valkey, a mission-critical part of the financial infrastructure.

Work includes moving cache clusters into production from start to finish, sizing them and planning shards, configuring failover and replication, handling upgrades, and rolling out changes in stages with a way to revert. The engineer also swaps hand-run cache tasks, such as provisioning, configuration changes and access grants, for automated self-service flows that leave an audit trail.

Operating the fleet is a major part of the role. That means setting service-level objectives, creating alerts for hot keys, memory strain and replication delay, and using on-call findings to cut repeat operational work. The engineer also advises client teams on caching strategy, including key design, time-to-live settings, consistency and client timeouts.

The posting asks for at least two years of software engineering experience and proficiency in Python or Kotlin. Helpful background includes AWS, MySQL, Redis or Valkey, Terraform and Kubernetes, and experience running an in-memory store in production with an understanding of replication, persistence, cluster mode and eviction. Experience with on-call duty for a stateful service is also listed.

Eligibility is limited to applicants living in nine listed Canadian provinces. The posted base pay range is CAD 133,000 to 183,000 per year. Staff may also receive stock-based awards from the parent company, Affirm Holdings, Inc.

Responsibilities

  • Move and grow Redis and Valkey cache clusters from start to finish, delivering in phases against agreed targets.
  • Size clusters and shards, configure failover and replication, and handle upgrades with phased releases that can be reversed.
  • Turn hand-run provisioning, configuration and access requests into automated, logged self-service flows.
  • Set SLOs and create alerts covering hot keys, memory strain and replication delay.
  • Use on-call findings to cut repeat operational work.
  • Advise client teams on key design, time-to-live settings, consistency and client timeouts.
  • Share fleet data with the team's roadmap and collaborate with peers and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Two-plus years of software engineering work.
  • Hands-on time designing, building and launching backend systems.
  • Proficiency in Python or Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and with AWS, MySQL, Redis or Valkey, Terraform and Kubernetes.
  • Production experience with Redis, Valkey or another in-memory store, covering replication, persistence, cluster mode and eviction.
  • Able to think through caching workloads end to end: hit ratios, slow-request tails, hotspots, thundering herds and data consistency.
  • Experience scripting infrastructure work in Python and managing it with Terraform and Kubernetes.
  • Has handled on-call duty for a stateful service, taking incidents from symptoms to a lasting fix.

Qualifications

  • Practical experience of equal standing, or a university degree in a related discipline.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Monthly allowances covering health, wellness and technology purchases.
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage that is 100 percent subsidized for employees and dependents.
  • May also receive stock-based awards from Affirm Holdings, Inc.
