Job Description
Affirm's Data and Storage Services group runs the company's data infrastructure, and its Online Storage team supplies managed databases that services use to hold data. Affirm is hiring a Software Engineer II to help expand its caching service, which runs on Redis and Valkey. The role is remote and limited to candidates living in the listed Canadian provinces.
The engineer leads cache cluster migrations in phases, plans capacity and shard layout, configures failover, replication and upgrades with rollback routes, and replaces manual cache requests with audited self-service flows. Running the fleet involves setting service-level objectives, configuring warnings for hot-key activity, memory strain and lagging replicas, and reducing operational toil using on-call findings. The engineer also consults client teams on key naming, expiration policies, consistency and client timeouts, and shares fleet observations with the team's planning.
Applicants should have at least two years as a software engineer and experience building and releasing backend services in Python or Kotlin. Production experience with Redis, Valkey or another in-memory store is important, including how replication, durability, cluster topology, eviction and failover behave. Familiarity with AWS, MySQL, Terraform and Kubernetes is expected, along with on-call experience for a stateful service. The CAN base pay range is $133,000 to $183,000 per year, and the posting adds that equity may be available through Affirm Holdings, Inc.
Responsibilities
- Own cluster migrations to Redis and Valkey end to end, delivered in agreed phases.
- Plan capacity and sharding, set up failover and replication, and carry out upgrades with staged rollouts and rollback plans.
- Swap manual provisioning, configuration and access requests for automated, audited self-service.
- Define service-level objectives and build alerts for hot-key activity, memory strain and lagging replicas.
- Advise client teams on caching design, expiration policy and consistency.
- Split projects into tasks, deliver in stages, and help with on-call and routine operational care.
Requirements
- At least two years as a software engineer.
- History of building and launching backend services.
- Proficiency in Python or Kotlin.
- Hands-on production use of Redis, Valkey or a similar in-memory store.
- Knows how replication, durability settings, cluster topology, memory eviction and failover behave under stress.
- Experience automating infrastructure with Terraform, Kubernetes and Python.
- Experience with on-call duty for a stateful service and taking incidents through to permanent fixes.
- Able to reason end to end about a cache workload: lookup success rates, slow outliers, popular keys, thundering herds and agreement with the database.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Medical premiums fully covered for employees and dependents.
- Monthly stipends for tech setup and health and wellness.
- Time off that flexes around your needs, plus a generous holiday schedule.
- Employee stock purchase plan with discounted Affirm shares.
