Figma seeks a Machine Learning / AI Engineer to help build its platform for brainstorming, prototyping, and real-time design collaboration. This full-time position sits within the company's expanding AI division, bridging the gap between infrastructure, applied machine learning, and product development. Individuals in this function will work on generative AI features, ranking systems, and search capabilities while partnering with researchers, product managers, and software engineers.

This opportunity is well-suited for engineers experienced in taking machine learning models from conception through production while scaling underlying data pipelines. Team members operate at the intersection of core system architecture and user-facing features to improve workflow efficiency. Candidates can fulfill this role either from designated United States hubs or remotely within the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and productionize machine learning models for generative AI, search, discovery, ranking, and retrieval-augmented generation features
  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines, annotation systems, and human-in-the-loop workflows for training and evaluation datasets
  • Partner with AI researchers to refine datasets, evaluation metrics, and model architectures for improved relevance and quality
  • Collaborate with product engineers to deliver AI features across the Figma platform
  • Work alongside infrastructure engineers to optimize systems dedicated to training, deployment, inference, and monitoring
  • Investigate technical possibilities to contribute to Figma's long-term artificial intelligence vision

Requirements

  • Have at least five years of industry experience in software engineering
  • Bring a minimum of three years of focused experience in applied machine learning or artificial intelligence
  • Demonstrate strong background in end-to-end model development including training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring
  • Show proficiency using Python alongside machine learning libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Spark MLlib, or XGBoost
  • Possess experience in designing scalable data and annotation pipelines alongside model quality evaluation systems
  • Demonstrate past experience in mentoring or leading others to foster technical excellence

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with natural language processing, ranking, search relevance, or retrieval-augmented generation systems
  • Experience working with MLOps and AI infrastructure including automation, observability, and CI/CD workflows
  • Background in contributing to design-focused or creative machine learning applications
  • Knowledge of programming languages like C++ or Go
  • Possession of a product mindset capable of connecting technical tasks to business outcomes and user value
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
