Job Description
Zoox is building a custom-designed, fully autonomous vehicle fleet along with the infrastructure needed to deploy this technology commercially. Operating at the intersection of machine learning, design, and robotics, the organization aims to deliver next-generation urban mobility services. Within this ecosystem, the Mission Planner group creates high-level routing strategies that direct autonomous cars toward passenger destinations.
This position suits a software engineer eager to tackle complex routing challenges in dynamic urban environments. In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with the Cloud Services group to process passenger requests and live traffic information, while also partnering with trajectory planning, controls, and behavioral planning teams to achieve real-time adaptability. Team members work directly with physical robot platforms to test, observe, and refine their code in live settings.
Day-to-day work involves creating graph search algorithms, building scalable sequential decision-making frameworks under uncertainty, and defining the technical roadmap for the team. Candidates will coordinate cross-functional projects across multiple engineering departments and take ownership of critical software components. Zoox values diverse backgrounds and encourages applicants to apply even if they do not meet every single listed expectation.
Responsibilities
- Design algorithms for the mission planner, incorporating graph search and behavioral planning connections
- Deploy, test, and refine software directly on autonomous robot hardware
- Partner with peers to integrate software components across different engineering departments
- Establish short- and long-term technical strategies for the mission planning group
- Drive cross-functional projects spanning cloud services, behavioral planning, and mission planning
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
- Bring two or more years of professional industry experience
- Demonstrate software development proficiency in C++
- Apply graph search methods such as Dijkstra, D*, and A*
- Model real-world scenarios using frameworks like Markov Decision Processes
- Build scalable solutions for sequential decision-making under constraints and uncertainty
- Show proven experience writing software for a released commercial product in robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or drones
Qualifications
- Possess a Doctor of Philosophy degree in computer science or a related domain
- Bring practical background working with autonomous robots
