Gusto operates a platform that supports over 500,000 small businesses across the United States by managing payroll, employee health insurance, retirement plans, and HR services. The company is currently hiring a Software Engineer, Payments to work on a hybrid basis from its San Francisco office.
In this role, the engineer will join the Payments organization to entirely re-architect the money movement and management infrastructure. Responsibilities include designing scalable systems, building software that powers first- and third-party products, guiding end-to-end technical projects, and mentoring other engineers. Artificial intelligence tools are a fundamental aspect of daily work at the company, and all personnel are expected to engage with relevant AI technologies.
This position is well-suited for seasoned professionals who enjoy tackling complex and ambiguous challenges in a test-driven environment. Ideal candidates bring extensive experience building mission-critical, fault-tolerant distributed systems and are comfortable influencing multi-team architectural strategies.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test infrastructure for Payments and Risk policy teams
- Scale massive Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications
- Collaborate across engineering, product, design, data science, and operations
- Build software platforms serving millions of businesses
- Mentor and support fellow engineers on scalable solutions
- Actively engage with role-relevant AI tools
Requirements
- At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience
- Experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software and distributed systems
- Experience guiding multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products
- Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production code
Qualifications
- Background in payments or accounting systems
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React
