Job Description

Vercel, known as the agentic infrastructure company, is seeking a Software Engineer, Scheduled Tasks to join its remote team on a full-time basis. For over ten years, the organization has provided builders with tools to move from initial concept to production with strong security and developer experiences, serving millions of developers and organizations such as OpenAI, PayPal, Ramp, and Supreme.

In this position, you will work within the Scheduled Tasks team to build platform primitives that allow applications and agents to execute work immediately, deferred, or over extended periods. The group manages Vercel Workflows, Queues, and Cron, which enable event-driven, long-running, and scheduled application development. This position sits at the intersection of distributed systems and developer experience.

This opportunity is well-suited for engineers who enjoy designing APIs, SDKs, and developer tooling while tackling complex challenges in execution, scheduling, state, and message delivery. You will collaborate closely with various internal teams to translate customer needs into reliable primitives, participate in design reviews, write tested code, and engage with the open-source community to reduce friction in background processing.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate platform capabilities across Workflows, Queues, and Cron
  • Help developers build applications and agents that coordinate background, event-driven, and scheduled work
  • Build APIs, SDKs, and tooling for defining, running, and managing durable work at scale
  • Work on distributed-systems foundations including scheduling, message delivery, execution, retries, and state
  • Partner with product, developer experience, and infrastructure teams to turn customer needs into clear developer primitives
  • Raise the engineering bar through design reviews, tested code, production ownership, and technical communication
  • Engage with developers and the open-source community to understand background job friction and improve the platform

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems, developer platforms, or cloud infrastructure
  • Comfort working across APIs, runtimes, storage, networking, and production operations
  • Experience with one or more of job queues, schedulers, workflow orchestration, event-driven systems, state machines, stream processing, or durable execution
  • Understanding of the tradeoffs behind delivery guarantees, retries, idempotency, concurrency, and fault tolerance
  • Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code and solve complex technical problems
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams

Qualifications

  • Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Experience with open-source infrastructure or developer tools
