Twilio is seeking a Software Engineer to join its Voice Connectivity Trust team in the US. This role suits an engineer who wants to work on distributed production systems, scale global platforms, and collaborate with product managers and cross-functional teams. You will handle all stages of the software development lifecycle, from architectural design and coding to deployment and on-call support. The position involves working extensively with JVM technologies, cloud platforms, and modern AI coding assistants to continuously deliver reliable features.
While Twilio operates as a remote-first organization, you may occasionally need to travel for team gatherings, functional off-sites, or client meetings. Please note that this specific role cannot be hired in California, New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, or Connecticut.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, verify, deploy, and maintain real-time services featuring high throughput and low latency
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify customer needs and deliver simple, scalable solutions
- Write detailed technical prose to communicate effectively with leads, architects, and peers
- Scale a complex distributed platform across global points of presence focusing on high availability, reliability, and media fidelity
- Participate in the complete software development lifecycle, covering requirement gathering, sprint planning, testing, and production deployments
- Manage production services through on-call rotations, incident responses, and alert monitoring
Requirements
- At least two to three years of practical experience working within large-scale distributed application environments utilizing JVM technologies
- Demonstrated background in constructing RESTful services, designing APIs, and implementing event-driven architectures such as Kafka and SQS
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines
- Hands-on practice utilizing cloud infrastructure providers like AWS, GCP, OpenStack, or Azure
- Experience handling on-call duties, incident handling, and using monitoring tools including Prometheus, Datadog, and Grafana
- Strong proficiency in Java and foundational computer science principles like data structures and algorithms
- Demonstrated ability using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Cursor
- Capacity to evaluate AI-generated code critically for security, correctness, performance, and maintainability
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline
- Demonstrable metrics showing how AI tools were used to boost productivity
- Experience scaling backend data tiers using various SQL, NoSQL, and caching technologies
- Proven ability to design and develop horizontally scalable, resilient backend production systems under load
- Prior knowledge working with the SIP protocol
- Prior knowledge working with the Stir/Shaken protocol
