Smartsheet is seeking a Sr. Forward Deployed AI Engineer to lead its most demanding AI implementations for customers. The job is remote and open to people eligible to work in the UK. Smartsheet has been helping teams organize work for two decades and is now combining human teams with AI agents to take over repetitive tasks and draw out insights.
This engineer carries a project from early technical discovery through live production, then hands it to the solutions group. Tasks include designing systems in which several AI agents coordinate, building Model Context Protocol resource bundles tailored to each client, and producing Deployment Kits that consultants and partners without engineering backgrounds can use. The person also runs AI workshops for a team pod, leads enablement sprints, shares field learnings in a weekly strategy meeting and coaches less experienced forward deployed engineers.
The position fits a senior engineer with six to ten or more years of production software work, including at least three years putting AI or machine learning into production. Strong Python and solid TypeScript or JavaScript skills are expected, plus experience with multi-agent orchestration, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation and evaluation frameworks. Travel, both domestic and abroad, is expected for roughly a quarter to half of the time.
Responsibilities
- Direct intricate deployments involving several systems, from scoping through ongoing client management
- Run the pod's AI workshop series and adapt modules for each customer
- Design multi-agent architectures that fit a customer's workflows and compliance demands
- Create MCP resource bundles specific to clients and industries
- Ensure Deployment Kits are clear enough for non-engineers to follow
- Lead Solutions Enablement Sprints with training materials and certification standards
- Produce strategy memos, field reports, reusable agent components and platform change proposals
- Mentor junior FDEs on engagements, code reviews and kit quality
Requirements
- Six to ten or more years building production software, including three-plus years deploying AI or ML systems
- Deep expertise in Python and capable use of TypeScript or JavaScript
- Record of leading complicated enterprise technical projects from start to finish
- Experience handling client relationships, security reviews and dependable production systems
- Production LLM skills across multi-agent orchestration, MCP or tool calling, RAG tuning, evaluation methods and large-scale agent rollout
- Architecture knowledge spanning enterprise software, cloud platforms and AI services
- Track record of building reusable components that teammates put into live use
- Strong writing and speaking skills for design documents, runbooks, memos and training
- Able to travel domestically and internationally about 25 to 50 percent of the time
- Continuing eligibility to work in the UK
- A bachelor's or master's degree in computing or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
Qualifications
- Built or grew a forward deployed or solutions engineering team
- Background as a technical founder
- Hands-on work with Databricks, AWS Bedrock or Temporal
- Domain depth in healthcare, financial services or the public sector
- Contributions to agent frameworks such as Strands SDK, LangChain or open-source MCP servers
- German or French fluency
- Understanding of AI governance and rules such as GDPR and the UK and EU AI Acts
