Job Description
This is an individual-contributor software engineering role at Smartsheet, which the posting presents as a leader in Intelligent Work Management, valued at $10bn in market capitalization. The engineer works remotely from Bulgaria and reports to an engineering leader. Work covers the full development cycle, from concept through release, with quality checked at each stage. Typical tasks include building new features, improving existing ones, maintaining the service interfaces used by millions of people, and taking part in architecture discussions for scalable, highly available applications.
The platform is a SaaS product running on AWS, with infrastructure described as code using Terraform. The core system combines a legacy Java monolith with a growing set of microservices written mainly in Java and Go, plus a handful of Kotlin services. Product teams building user interfaces use React.
Engineers also take part in quality assurance and defect resolution, work with systems engineers on infrastructure problems, and can move between user interface, server-side, testing and platform work to broaden their skills.
Responsibilities
- Take part in every phase of development, from concept to release, with a focus on quality
- Contribute to architecture discussions for scalable, always-available applications
- Build new product features and improve existing ones
- Develop and maintain service interfaces used by millions of people
- Partner with systems engineers to troubleshoot infrastructure issues
- Participate in testing, defect fixes and keeping systems reliable
- Work across several disciplines to widen technical skills
- Handle other assigned duties
Requirements
- Working ability in at least one of Go, Java, C or Node.js
- Knowledge of object-oriented principles and how microservices are structured
- Experience building scalable, highly available applications
- Comfort working on the Linux command line
- Familiarity with front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React.js
- A computer science degree or equivalent industry experience
- Ongoing legal authorization to work in Bulgaria and fluent English
Qualifications
- Working with DynamoDB, MySQL or other SQL and NoSQL stores
- Some AWS and Docker background, or AWS certification as a Developer or Solutions Architect
- Experience with orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or HashiCorp products
