Job Description
This is a principal-level architecture role on the Smartsheet platform, a product that helps teams organize and manage their work. The engineer would shape the next generation of that platform, with responsibility for how it scales, stays secure and performs for a very large global user base.
The job is fully remote and performed from Bulgaria. The principal engineer reports to an engineering leader who is also based in Bulgaria. Smartsheet describes its broader direction as pairing people with AI agents, so that routine tasks are automated and insights can be found at scale.
Much of the work is technical leadership rather than hands-on feature delivery. The role sets architecture strategy, makes major technical decisions, reviews project designs, guides reviews of launches for high-impact projects and drives cross-team initiatives to completion. Mentoring senior engineers and influencing practice across several teams are part of the job, as is working with product managers to weigh market demand against technical limits.
The posting is aimed at engineers with a long record of designing high-availability systems, a working grasp of distributed computing, event-driven designs and microservice architectures, and experience leading large architectural change. Clear communication with both technical staff and senior executives is expected.

- Design and lead the build of next-generation platform architecture with attention to scale, security and performance
- Set architecture strategy and take the lead on significant technical choices for the platform
- Review technical project designs and give feedback in design reviews
- Own cross-functional technical initiatives and keep several teams aligned on shared goals
- Chair launch reviews for major projects
- Mentor senior engineers and spread best practices across teams
- Work with product management to balance market needs against technical constraints

- Take on additional assigned duties
Requirements
- Experience designing scalable, highly available systems in several languages, including Python, Go, Java, C/C++ and SQL
- Working understanding of distributed computing, event-driven architecture and microservices
- Track record of leading large architecture transformations that span multiple teams
- Skill in web app development plus data structures and OO design
- History of mentoring senior engineers toward technical leadership
- Ability to explain complex technical topics to technical staff and executives
- Experience with large-scale cloud infrastructure and database performance tuning
- Works autonomously and keeps work tied to business goals
- Familiarity with Agile or Scrum practices
- Continuously authorized to work in Bulgaria, and fluent in English
