Job Description
Zoox is building an urban mobility-as-a-service ecosystem centered around an original, fully autonomous vehicle fleet. The company combines artificial intelligence, robotics, and design to introduce next-generation transportation.
As a Staff Compute Systems Engineer within Advanced Hardware Engineering, the professional will shape compute and control platforms for autonomous vehicle hardware. This role involves defining and documenting traceable requirements, directing functional safety evaluations, and ensuring that systems achieve reliable failure-safe operations.
The position is ideal for an experienced systems engineer who can bridge hardware, software, and safety domains. Key activities include conducting Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, driving architectural consensus, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to support system releases.
Responsibilities
- Formulate traceable computing specifications derived from overall product objectives.
- Draft comprehensive documentation for compute and control modules alongside product, business, safety, and engineering groups.
- Resolve architecture trade-offs with software and hardware teams for current and future vehicle platforms.
- Examine performance data to establish release metrics and guide architecture decisions.
- Partner with firmware and software engineering units during implementation to verify requirements.
- Direct cross-functional sign-off procedures for autonomy and compute systems.
- Contribute to Verification and Validation planning and review test outcomes for controls and compute setups.
- Perform System FMEA and part-level reliability failure mode evaluations to address potential design risks early.
- Investigate root causes for safety-related field issues involving compute platforms.
- Coordinate with collaborators to enhance diagnostic coverage for latent and single-point failures on existing hardware.
- Execute functional safety reviews to maintain alignment with ISO 26262 objectives.
Requirements
- Possess at least 8 years of relevant, staff-level professional experience in robotics, autonomous vehicles, ADAS, automotive, or aerospace fields focusing on systems design, validation, and safety analysis for mission-critical systems with fail-operational redundancy.
- Demonstrate strong electrical engineering fundamentals, including knowledge of compute architectures like ARM and x86, communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, GMSL, and FPD-Link, plus power electronics and high-speed signals.
- Bring practical familiarity with FMEA or FMEDA methodologies applied to safety-critical hardware.
- Show working knowledge of automotive safety standards including ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or equivalent degree in Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Robotics, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering.
- Earn a PhD in a relevant technical discipline.
- Bring background in high assurance computing solutions and GPU hardware.
- Demonstrate familiarity with artificial intelligence models utilized for perception, trajectory planning, and behavior planning.
- Show prior involvement in sensor interface design, data throughput analysis, latency management, bandwidth, and timing synchronization across architectures.
- Have past experience conducting hazard analysis, validation, verification, and functional decomposition.
