Job Description
Faire operates a global technology wholesale marketplace connecting independent retailers and brands. The engineering organization maintains the software underpinning this marketplace, and the Data Platform group ensures that data is accessible and accurate for internal consumers across product engineering, data science, finance, and strategy.
The company seeks a Staff Data Infrastructure Engineer to take ownership of the data transport architecture moving information from production datastores like MySQL and CockroachDB into analytical environments. This is a hands-on position requiring the design and implementation of next-generation ingestion and streaming layers using modern data stack tools. The ideal practitioner brings deep expertise in large-scale data plumbing, manages platform reliability, and guides cross-functional technical migrations while mentoring teammates.
Faire functions on a hybrid model where employees work from an office three days each week—specifically Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one flexible weekday—with up to four remote working weeks permitted annually. Compensation for this position in specific major metropolitan areas ranges from $246,500 to $339,000 annually, alongside eligibility for equity and comprehensive benefits.
Responsibilities
- Define the technical roadmap and strategy for transporting data from operational databases into analytical storage layers over the coming years
- Develop change data capture and streaming ingestion workflows moving MySQL binlogs and CockroachDB changefeeds into Kafka and S3-based Iceberg tables
- Establish data contracts and integrate automated observability platforms such as Anomalo and Monte Carlo to enforce strict platform service-level agreements
- Operate Apache Airflow and Fivetran while evaluating whether to build internal solutions or purchase external products
- Manage platform reliability through defined SLOs, incident responses, and on-call rotations
- Guide technical migrations moving legacy pipelines to modern architectures without disrupting dependent downstream workflows
- Provide mentorship to engineers to elevate the overall data engineering practices across the team
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience designing and scaling production-grade data infrastructure that serves dependent teams
- Extensive background in streaming ingestion and change data capture from operational databases through Kafka
- Practical knowledge of lakehouse ecosystems utilizing open table formats, particularly Apache Iceberg on Amazon S3
- Advanced proficiency with Apache Spark, Databricks, and Snowflake environments running on shared storage
- Direct operational experience managing data quality, SLAs, observability tools, and Airflow at scale
- Strong SQL abilities and data modeling capabilities designed for analytical users
- Proficiency in Python paired with at least one additional language such as Kotlin, Java, Scala, or Go
- Experience deploying and managing cloud infrastructure on AWS utilizing Terraform
- Understanding of data governance principles including access controls, lineage, PII handling, and retention policies
- Track record of directing cross-team data initiatives and mentoring senior technical staff
Qualifications
- Background working within transaction-heavy business models such as e-commerce or digital marketplaces
