Job Description
This full-time Staff Data Scientist role at Monzo can be based in London or Barcelona, or done remotely within the UK. Monzo is a UK bank that reports more than 11 million customers in the country and says most of its growth comes through referrals and word of mouth. This senior individual contributor post combines technical depth with business judgement, applied to some of the firm's knottiest decisions. Data is stored in one place, and roughly 90 percent of routine data-driven decisions run through self-serve analytics in Looker, leaving data scientists free for bigger questions.
The Staff Data Scientist takes charge of problems that are both strategic and critical to the business. The job sets the data direction for a major domain or collective, ties customer and commercial aims to a coherent slate of data science projects, and defines murky problems that cut across teams and involve real trade-offs. It works alongside senior figures in risk, operations, research, design, ML, engineering and product, offering an independent technical view that produces measurable gains.
Hands-on work remains part of the job. The data scientist designs measurement strategies and metric maps, sets standards for experimentation, causal inference, forecasting and optimisation, and picks methods matched to each decision and its risks. The role also oversees critical data products from start to finish so that they stay robust, documented and in use. Coaching data scientists and analytics engineers, and raising the bar through reviews, reusable methods and proposals, form a major part of the post.
Applicants should have guided intricate data science programmes from murky starting points to results, and helped steer strategy across a big product or business unit. Deep expertise in several data science disciplines is expected, along with the ability to communicate assumptions and risks clearly and to keep analysis rigorous. Working knowledge of SQL and Python is needed. Pay is listed at £124,400 to £165,000, plus incentive awards tied to performance and benefits, and part-time working is considered where possible.
