Job Description
Huntress is hiring a Staff Database Reliability Engineer to join its remote-first SRE Engineering team. Established in 2015 by former NSA cyber operators, the company provides enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions to businesses, protecting millions of endpoints and identities worldwide through in-house technology and a continuous human-led Security Operations Center. In this fully remote role reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will focus on building, scaling, monitoring, and stabilizing the core databases supporting the security platform and endpoint agents.
This position involves continuously fine-tuning database configurations, forecasting resource demands, designing performance dashboards, establishing indexing strategies, and executing advanced scaling methods like partitioning and sharding. You will also collaborate with the SRE group to enhance cloud deployments on Azure and provide technical consulting to application squads regarding query and schema design.
Responsibilities
- Audit and optimize PostgreSQL configuration settings such as shared_buffers, work_mem, and autovacuum parameters to improve resource usage against current workloads
- Anticipate future infrastructure demands based on software expansion and agent activity trends to plan scaling strategies
- Build and oversee monitoring dashboards and alert mechanisms to track core performance indicators including throughput, latency, cache hit ratio, and active connections
- Establish and maintain efficient indexing plans while removing obsolete or redundant indexes that hinder write speeds
- Execute advanced scaling techniques including table partitioning and coordination of database sharding
- Coordinate with the SRE unit to refine PostgreSQL environments on Azure for optimal cloud storage and network performance
- Offer technical advice to software developers regarding their schema, query, and index configurations
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on background handling, configuring, maintaining, and scaling PostgreSQL clusters in production environments
- Demonstrated expertise in setting up and supporting backup and recovery procedures, failover systems, and replication methods including streaming and logical replication
- Comprehensive knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, covering transaction management, locking protocols, write-ahead logging, and background worker processes
- Extensive practical experience supporting terabyte-scale or high-transaction volume PostgreSQL databases in live 24/7 production environments
- Familiarity with observability platforms such as DataDog or NewRelic
- Strong proficiency in performance tuning for critical database parameters
Qualifications
- Familiarity with NoSQL data models such as document schemas for MongoDB, key-value stores for Redis, or column families for Cassandra
- Understanding of relational database use cases versus non-relational alternatives
- Background working with infrastructure as code
