Job Description
Canva is hiring a Staff Frontend Engineer for its Editing Performance group, a hybrid post based in Sydney. The team works on the core design editor, reworking key architecture mostly in TypeScript, with increasing use of React Native and native code. The aim is an editor that stays quick, fluid and dependable on any device or network, even as designs grow more complex.
The engineer designs, builds and ships software side by side with engineering heads, product managers and designers. Work includes measuring speed and stability through instrumentation and dashboards, deciding priorities by evidence, and showing results. The engineer also builds tooling, frameworks and libraries that help other Canva developers ship responsive features, breaks large projects into manageable parts, and shares knowledge across groups.
The team concentrates on page load and interaction speed, memory use and reliability, and on the measurement systems that show performance to others. Strong candidates have commercial experience with large, intricate applications, SDKs or APIs, and deep TypeScript knowledge in codebases that have lived for years. They should have helped shape architecture and be grounded in computer science basics, including async programming, data structures and design patterns. Familiarity with browser rendering, event handling, Web Workers or WebGL and WebGPU is a clear advantage. Interviews are online.
