Job Description
Alpaca, a global financial services enterprise and regulated brokerage infrastructure provider backed by major global investors, is seeking a Staff Fullstack Engineer to drive the technical direction for its Trading API product team. In this remote, full-time role, you will act as the senior technical anchor for a distributed group of more than 400 professionals, shaping the end-to-end customer experience for developers, institutions, and traders who interact directly with the platform. Your responsibilities span frontend customer interfaces and real-time trading features, as well as the backend identity, permission, account structure, and security frameworks that guard against data exposure and financial loss. You will lead through code, architecture design reviews, and mentorship without direct personnel management duties, partnering closely with product managers, designers, compliance officers, and adjacent engineering units. This opportunity suits an experienced, product-minded engineer with a strong background in both complex frontend development and backend services, who excels at designing secure authorization models and building mission-critical financial or trading applications.
Responsibilities
- Own the architectural roadmap for user access, authentication, authorization, permissions, and account models within the Trading API.
- Design server-enforced access structures for complex account types including sub-accounts, multi-user accounts, entity and advisor portfolios, and delegated agent access.
- Lead the delivery of next-generation customer applications incorporating order entry, real-time market data, and order and position views.
- Migrate legacy monolith endpoints to dedicated application backends with clearly defined API contracts for ledger, trading, transfers, accounts, and market data.
- Establish the security standard for user-facing systems covering OAuth workflows, multi-factor authentication, passkeys, rate limiting, and rapid remediation of vulnerabilities.
- Define safe delivery practices encompassing feature flags, preview environments, staged rollouts, and robust observability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, compliance, security, and brokerage operations teams.
- Lead technical design reviews, mentor mid-level and senior engineers, and resolve production escalations for customer-facing systems.
Requirements
- Have eight or more years of software engineering experience encompassing both backend services and customer-facing applications.
- Demonstrate ownership of a production environment where software defects risked financial loss, incorrect access grants, or data exposure.
- Possess deep expertise in authentication and authorization protocols such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, multi-factor authentication, and permission models.
- Bring strong backend programming experience in Go, or extensive experience in Rust, C#, Java, or Kotlin paired with a readiness to transition to Go.
- Demonstrate advanced frontend skills using TypeScript and React to build state-heavy applications.
- Possess solid knowledge of relational databases, REST and gRPC API design, and service-oriented architectures running on Kubernetes.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with building trading, P&L, order entry, charting, or real-time market data financial applications.
- Experience working with identity providers such as Auth0, Keycloak, or Amazon Cognito, or designing in-house identity solutions, WebAuthn, and passkeys.
- Background in API developer products, SDKs, developer dashboards, scopes, and API keys.
- Exposure to agentic AI integrations such as Model Context Protocol servers.
- Familiarity with institutional trading workflows and the FIX protocol.
- Previous experience leading legacy monolith migrations in high-stakes production settings.
- Strong preference for prior experience handling real-time data through WebSockets or other streaming protocols.
