Job Description

Gusto operates a platform serving over 500,000 small businesses across the United States by managing payroll, health insurance, 401(k) plans, and human resources. The company is currently seeking a Staff Product Mobile Engineer for its Business Money team based in San Francisco. This hybrid role focuses on building and evolving native mobile experiences that connect employment and personal finance, helping everyday workers manage their paychecks, access on-demand pay, utilize high-yield cash accounts, and establish healthy money habits.

This position suits an experienced mobile engineer who can design and deploy end-to-end features across both iOS and Android platforms using declarative frameworks such as SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose. The work involves partnering with cross-functional product, design, and engineering teams, as well as external banking partners, to handle complex technical challenges in a regulated domain. Team members are expected to utilize AI-native workflows and tooling to accelerate development and improve code quality.

The role requires working from the San Francisco office approximately two to three days per week on designated days, with an onboarding travel requirement of two days to a Gusto office. Candidates should be comfortable navigating ambiguous problems, establishing mobile architecture standards, and mentoring peers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and launch native mobile features across iOS and Android using SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose backed by a shared GraphQL schema
  • Drive the development lifecycle from initial concept through release, maintaining standards for mobile security, system performance, and technical rigor in a regulated banking environment
  • Integrate AI tools and practices to accelerate cross-platform feature translation and optimize team velocity
  • Partner with Engineering, Product Management, Design, and external banking partners to solve complex architectural challenges
  • Maintain mobile infrastructure, release pipelines, and test automation to support dual-platform scaling
  • Mentor colleagues, define mobile architectural standards, and perform opposite-platform code reviews

Requirements

  • At least eight years of professional mobile software development experience
  • Deep expertise in a primary native stack, specifically Swift for iOS or Kotlin for Android
  • Willingness to build natively across both iOS and Android platforms using SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose
  • Strong understanding of modern declarative UI paradigms, unidirectional data flow, and reactive state management
  • Experience leading multi-quarter technical initiatives from architecture and scoping to post-release monitoring
  • Familiarity with strongly typed API layers like GraphQL, offline caching, and data contracts

Qualifications

  • Production experience shipping features across both Swift and SwiftUI as well as Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
  • Background in the fintech or banking industry creating high-reliability mobile applications
  • Familiarity with build and release systems, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing environments
  • Experience implementing MVVM or modern unidirectional architecture patterns
