Job Description

Zoox is seeking a Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer for Product Security to establish and guide the security strategy for its autonomous robot fleet. The organization is building a ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle ecosystem designed for urban mobility, combining elements of machine learning, robotics, and design. Operating within the Product Security group, this position involves directing the security roadmap across current and future vehicle platforms, embedding security into physical and safety-critical robotic systems, and serving as a technical authority.

This opportunity is well-suited for an experienced security professional with a background in cyber-physical or embedded systems who wants to influence architectural safety at scale. The role requires collaborating closely with hardware, firmware, infrastructure, and autonomy teams to implement secure design principles, conduct threat modeling, and define standards for components like secure boot, cryptographic key management, and over-the-air updates. The position operates on a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Design and direct the long-term security architecture and multi-year roadmap for robots and fleet operations across embedded firmware, in-vehicle networks, cloud infrastructure, and supporting systems.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, autonomy, and infrastructure engineering groups to integrate security requirements directly into system design.
  • Conduct threat modeling exercises and architectural evaluations for new vehicle platforms and major feature releases to identify and prioritize risks.
  • Establish technical standards and guardrails such as secure boot, key management, network segmentation, and update security, promoting adoption across engineering departments.
  • Represent the Product Security division in cross-functional and leadership settings to explain technical risks in terms of safety and business impact.

Requirements

  • Bring a minimum of 10 years of experience in security engineering, with substantial tenure acting as an architect, staff engineer, or technical lead.
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in embedded and IoT security topics, including secure boot, TPM or TEE, cryptographic key management, and hardened firmware or OS design.
  • Possess proven experience designing security for intricate physical or cyber-physical architectures within industries such as automotive, robotics, aerospace, or industrial control.
  • Show a strong history of driving cross-functional technical strategy and influencing engineering leadership without relying on direct authority.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of network security, cloud security, and secure software development lifecycle practices.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience securing autonomous vehicles, robotics platforms, or connected safety-critical systems at scale.
  • Background in offensive security disciplines like red teaming or penetration testing to inform defensive architectural judgment.
  • Documented contributions to industry standards, published research, or conference presentations related to embedded, IoT, or automotive security.
