Job Description

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to act as a technical anchor for a compact, AI-native team. The employer gives people a clear, predictable way to pay over time without hidden fees or surprises. In this senior individual-contributor position, you will drive the technical direction for vendor-integrated banking infrastructure, operational tooling, and the data platform that supports Affirm's bank.

This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys taking on ambiguous, high-stakes challenges and designing systems from the ground up. You will establish the architectural patterns, code standards, and long-term technical strategy that the rest of the team builds against, while maintaining direct visibility with senior bank and company leadership. Your work will directly impact core surfaces like cloud infrastructure, networking, CI/CD, core banking configuration, and the integration boundary between the bank and Affirm Inc.

Day-to-day duties involve designing and operating the most complex parts of the stack, leading vendor selections, and collaborating with legal, risk, compliance, and internal audit teams to ensure products satisfy regulatory standards. You will leverage AI-assisted development tools extensively to scale your impact, handle incident response, and manage critical third-party partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Define the medium-to-long-term technical strategy and architecture calls for cloud infrastructure, core banking configuration, data platform, networking, CI/CD, and the integration boundary.
  • Design, build, integrate, and operate ambiguous, high-stakes system components end-to-end and manage incident response for them.
  • Drive third-party platform evaluations, integrations, ongoing oversight, and critical vendor relationships across core, data, identity, observability, and card-processing stacks.
  • Establish data flows, domain edges, and integration patterns between the bank and Affirm Inc while maintaining required legal and regulatory separation.
  • Design and document examiner-readable artifacts and partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, BSA/AML, Finance, and Internal Audit for regulatory readiness.
  • Set reliability, observability, alerting, disaster-recovery, and runbook practices to maintain a standalone-operable and audit-ready operational posture.
  • Communicate technical strategy, constraints, and tradeoffs clearly to executives, the Bank Board, and engineering teams across the organization.
  • Mentor peers, provide feedback, participate in hiring, and utilize AI tools and agentic workflows to multiply engineering output.

Requirements

  • Over eight years of software engineering experience with staff-level, hands-on builder credentials.
  • Track record of taking ambiguous, high-stakes systems from launch through operations.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows like Cursor, Claude, and Codex.
  • Strong background in public cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, along with Terraform and cloud data platforms such as Snowflake.
  • Experience working in regulated environments subject to external examination, producing examiner-facing documentation.
  • Direct experience selecting, integrating, and operating third-party platforms post-launch.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills tailored for executive and non-engineering stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Prior work inside a bank, neobank, Banking-as-a-Service provider, fintech with a chartered bank subsidiary, or card issuer/processor.
  • Direct experience with a de novo bank launch, early-stage bank buildout, or greenfield regulated platform.
  • Hands-on experience with a bank core, card processing or issuer processor integration, or digital bank experience integration.
  • Experience standing up a greenfield cloud organization, IAM model, and data platform under a default-deny security posture.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks including FDIC examinations, BSA/AML, GLBA, Reg P, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • 100% employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents.
  • Monthly spending stipends for technology, food, lifestyle, and family formation.
  • Flexible time off and generous holiday schedules.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan enabling discounted purchases of Affirm stock.
