Job Description

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its Fraud Decisioning group. Affirm offers installment-style payment options, and says it is remote-first, with most jobs workable from many places within the employing country. The team creates the tooling and infrastructure behind Affirm's anti-fraud controls, partners with other departments to roll those controls out and watch them, and applies analytics to sharpen decision quality.

In this technical leadership role, the engineer steers major cross-team efforts from scoping and specification through task planning, delivery, observation and ongoing care. Designs should be simple, quick to ship and easy to troubleshoot, and must account for things going wrong. The person also coaches and develops engineers, reads and critiques peers' work, collects input from stakeholders, and contributes to the design and evaluation of interviews.

Candidates typically bring six to ten or more years in software engineering, with people-leadership duties, a mentoring history, and a track record of building, launching and sustaining complex systems. The ability to translate multifaceted business and product goals into clean architectural components is central, as is collaboration with Product, ML, Analytics and Business groups. A degree at bachelor level in a relevant discipline, or a comparable hands-on background, is required. U.S. base pay is listed at $230,000 to $290,000 for California, Washington, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and $204,000 to $264,000 elsewhere in the country. New hires usually begin near the low end of the band. Team size is not disclosed.

Responsibilities

  • Drive large cross-team programs through scoping, specification, delivery, monitoring and upkeep.
  • Build designs that deploy cleanly, debug easily and hold up when components fail.
  • Produce clean, reusable code and review peers' work with constructive comments.
  • Coach engineers so they grow and take ownership of their components.
  • Gather stakeholder perspectives and align teams around a shared understanding.
  • Take part in hiring by running technical and soft-skill assessments and shaping interview content.

Requirements

  • Six to ten or more years in software engineering, including leadership duties.
  • Experience architecting, shipping and maintaining complicated systems.
  • Skill at turning complex business, product and technical needs into sound designs.
  • Mentoring history, including guiding junior engineers on best practices.
  • A degree at bachelor level in a relevant discipline, or a comparable hands-on background.

  • Employee stock purchase plan with discounted Affirm shares.
  • Equity rewards plus subsidized dental and vision coverage.
