Job Description

Affirm, which says it helps people pay over time without hidden fees, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Fraud Decisioning team in Canada. The team develops tools and systems that strengthen Affirm's fraud-fighting capabilities, works with partner teams to adopt and monitor them, and uses data to improve how fraud decisions are made.

The engineer provides technical leadership on large projects that span the organization. That covers project definition, technical specifications, task breakdown, delivery, monitoring and upkeep. The posting asks for elegant, simple designs that are easy to deploy and debug and that anticipate what happens when things go wrong.

Other responsibilities include mentoring engineers and helping them take ownership of their parts of an initiative, reviewing code and design work with constructive feedback, and making sure stakeholder input is heard and understood. The engineer also helps evaluate candidates during hiring and contributes to the interview content.

The posting wants six-to-ten-plus years of software engineering work, with leadership, mentoring and experience designing, shipping and upkeeping complex systems. The ideal candidate can also see system structure clearly, turn business and product goals into modules and components, and collaborate with product, ML, analytics and business partners.

Eligible applicants live in one of the following provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. The posted base pay range is CAD 181,000 to 241,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead organization-wide initiatives from project definition and specification through delivery, monitoring and maintenance.
  • Create simple, elegant designs that are easy to deploy and debug and that account for failure cases.
  • Write readable, reusable code and review peers' work with constructive feedback.
  • Mentor engineers and help them take ownership of their pieces of an initiative.
  • Collect stakeholder input and build a shared understanding across teams.
  • Evaluate candidates in technical and soft-skill interviews and help develop interview content.

Requirements

  • Six-to-ten-plus years of software engineering work, with leadership and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Hands-on record of designing, launching and sustaining complex systems.
  • Skill at converting intricate business, product and technical needs into strong system designs.
  • Strong big-picture system thinking that breaks requirements into modules or components.
  • Comfort collaborating with product managers, ML specialists, analytics staff and business units.

Qualifications

  • Practical experience of equal standing, or a university degree in a related discipline.
