Job Description

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Fraud Decisioning team. The role is remote, and the pay information provided applies to United States positions. The team builds the tools and systems that power Affirm's fraud defenses and uses analytics to make fraud decisions more accurate.

The engineer steers projects that cut across the organization. That covers defining the work, writing technical specifications, splitting it into tasks, and seeing it through delivery, monitoring and upkeep. The posting asks for elegant, simple designs that are easy to deploy and troubleshoot and that anticipate failure scenarios, together with clean code that others can reuse.

Additional duties include reviewing colleagues' work so quality stays consistent across teams, coaching engineers until they can own their part of an initiative, collecting stakeholder perspectives, and sitting on technical and soft-skill interview panels. The engineer also helps decide what interviews cover and what they require.

Candidates should bring 6 to 10 or more years of software engineering experience, including leadership roles, and should have built and launched complex systems. Working closely with product, machine learning, analytics and business teams is important, as is breaking business requirements down into system modules.

The listed base pay is $230,000 to $290,000 in California, Washington, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and $204,000 to $264,000 in other U.S. states. Equity awards may form part of total compensation alongside health, wellness and tech stipends.

  • Lead and coach engineers so they take ownership of their pieces of an initiative
  • Collect stakeholder input and build a shared understanding across groups
  • Take part in technical and soft-skill evaluations and help shape interview content

Requirements

  • Between six and ten-plus years of building software, including leadership responsibilities
  • Prior experience architecting, building, launching and maintaining complex systems
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers
  • Ability to turn business goals, product needs and technical constraints into strong system designs
  • Ability to break a business problem into system modules and components
  • Hands-on experience of equal value or a degree in a relevant discipline
