Job Description
Gusto is looking for an experienced full-stack professional to join its AI product platform teams. The organization supports over half a million small businesses across the United States by managing payroll, health insurance, 401(k) plans, and HR services. In this position, you will help shape foundational systems and production artificial intelligence agent architectures, working closely with internal engineering groups, product management, data, and design departments.
This opportunity is well-suited for a seasoned engineer who enjoys combining technical execution with real-world applications. You will be responsible for building self-service internal capabilities, maintaining core platform services like risk, payments, and compliance, and providing mentorship to team members. Gusto operates with a hybrid schedule, requiring employees near company offices to work on-site approximately two to three days each week. Additionally, new hires must travel to an office for a two-day onboarding period.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain evaluation frameworks across offline and online environments, including golden datasets and LLM-as-judge pipelines
- Establish regression gates, end-to-end observability, and tracing for agent runs
- Build, test, and maintain core platform services covering communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, and compliance
- Mentor other engineers to help solve complex technical challenges at a large scale
- Help scale large Ruby on Rails and Javascript or React applications
- Collaborate with product engineering, product management, data, and design teams to prototype, iterate, and launch daily
Requirements
- Minimum of eight years of software development experience
- Hands-on experience deploying artificial intelligence and large language model capabilities to production
- Fluency in daily use of artificial intelligence coding assistants across the development lifecycle
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code
- Commitment to working in a collaborative, test-driven environment
Qualifications
- Experience in or familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging artificial intelligence frameworks

The target cash compensation ranges from $163,000 to $204,000 in Denver and most remote locations, and from $197,000 to $247,000 in San Francisco and New York, with additional stock equity provided.
