Operating on a hybrid schedule, this full-time role involves building and scaling user-facing applications that support small businesses across the nation with payroll, health benefits, retirement, and HR operations. Gusto aims to assist small business owners by handling complex administrative systems, and expects all team members to actively engage with artificial intelligence tools relevant to their daily work.
This position is suited for a seasoned full-stack developer who wants to guide large-scale applications, mentor colleagues, and take charge of features throughout the entire product lifecycle from initial design to post-launch iteration. Ideal candidates will have extensive software development experience and a history of addressing complex technical challenges.
The position requires traveling to a Gusto office for a two-day onboarding period. For employees based in New York, office attendance is expected on designated days approximately two to three times per week. Cash compensation for this position in the New York location is targeted between $197,000 and $247,000, and stock equity is provided in addition to base pay and standard benefits.
Responsibilities
- Design, construct, and test core offerings such as Payroll, Benefits, HR, Retirement, Gusto Money, Gusto Solo, and Gusto Pro
- Guide and mentor other engineers to address complex technical challenges at a large scale
- Contribute to scaling major Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React applications
- Partner with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to discover user pain points and launch daily solutions
- Engage with role-relevant AI tools to support development, testing, and new capabilities
Requirements
- 10 or more years of professional software development experience
- Demonstrated background in building scalable features that resolve customer friction
- Experience managing multi-quarter projects addressing complex engineering problems with measurable impact
- Background handling large-scale refactoring along with performance and reliability concerns
- Ability to travel for a two-day onboarding session at a company office
- Compliance with hybrid office attendance of approximately two to three days per week when based in New York
