Job Description
Deliveroo now belongs to DoorDash. Its engineers build a three-sided marketplace connecting customers, riders and partners. In November 2023 the company launched non-food retail under the Deliveroo Shopping name, working with merchants of all sizes in grocery and retail.
This Staff Software Engineer post is based in London, hybrid with three office days a week. The engineer acts as the technical authority across teams, shapes answers to complex business questions, directs the long-term technical strategy, and manages delivery risk. Systems run under heavy traffic, with request volumes of roughly 20 thousand requests per minute or more. The engineer also mentors engineers at all levels and helps lead interviews and recruiting.
The retail platform lets stores manage orders through an in-house app, direct API links and pre-installed devices, while keeping catalogues and stock accurate. The stack includes Go, Ruby, Python and Scala, relational stores such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and NoSQL systems such as Redis, DynamoDB and Elasticsearch. Candidates should be able to build systems that absorb very large loads and complex logistics, and to rally teams around problems that have no set playbook.

- Design solutions to complex business problems in a high-traffic setting
- Shape the multi-year technical plan and manage timelines and risk

- Skill in bringing several disciplines together on unclear technical challenges
