Job Description
Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer for its Pro Integrations team in New York. The position is hybrid. People based in a Gusto office city are asked to come in on set days, typically two to three days a week.
The team creates and looks after the connections between Gusto and the outside software accounting firms rely on to run their practices, including the current bookkeeping integrations. More are expected as the portfolio grows. The engineer will own the existing connections, help build new ones and shape the technical direction and roadmap for a part of the business that is still taking form.
Day to day, the work is hands-on with Ruby on Rails and Sidekiq backend services that keep data synchronized between Gusto and partner platforms. The engineer weighs traditional API integrations against newer AI agent protocols such as MCP, and colleagues in product and data science help make each connection fit how accountants actually work.
The role fits an engineer who has carried multi-quarter projects from scoping through launch and can explain tradeoffs to engineers and business partners alike. Beyond building, the engineer reviews code, helps set technical standards for a team still establishing its habits, and mentors colleagues as the group grows.
Gusto lists targeted cash compensation of $197,000 to $247,000 for New York, San Francisco and Seattle, and $163,000 to $204,000 for Denver. Stock equity is on top of that, and final offers depend on experience and location.
