Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Invoicing and Billing platform team in San Francisco. This hybrid position is suited for backend engineers who want to build and scale high-throughput transactional billing systems that generate accurate customer invoices and integrate directly with accounting infrastructure. Gusto operates a platform that provides payroll, benefits, and HR services to over 500,000 small businesses nationwide.

In this role, you will guide the full lifecycle of commerce systems, from initial architectural design to long-term performance ownership. You will engineer core billing solutions that support modern monetization strategies, such as multi-entity, multi-currency anniversary billing. The position requires active engagement with AI tools to accelerate development workflows, as artificial intelligence is integrated across Gusto's engineering operations. Ideal candidates are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional product, design, and data groups while mentoring peers to tackle complex technical challenges at a large scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test core billing platform features including usage jobs, subscriptions, orders, invoice generation, payments, reporting, and accounting integrations
  • Mentor other engineers to solve complex technical problems within large-scale domains
  • Contribute to the scaling of large Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, and React applications
  • Partner with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to prototype, iterate, and launch solutions
  • Engage actively with AI tools relevant to the engineering role

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience
  • Experience building large, high-throughput distributed systems
  • Background in the commerce domain covering invoicing, commerce, payment processing, or revenue recognition
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable user impact
  • Experience handling large-scale refactors, performance tuning, and reliability issues
  • Capacity to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
  • Ability to travel to a Gusto office for onboarding
  • Ability to work from the San Francisco office on designated days approximately 2 to 3 days per week

Qualifications

  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver platform capabilities
  • Familiarity with emerging AI frameworks and evaluating safe AI scaling practices
  • Experience in or interest in working with Ruby on Rails
