This remote, full-time position is for a Staff Software Engineer who will guide technical architecture and strategy for core insurance subsystems.
This opportunity is well-suited for an experienced software developer who excels at building scalable, highly available distributed backend systems while balancing long-term engineering quality with rapid business launches. The chosen candidate will collaborate closely with product management, data science, legal teams, and design partners to build robust experimentation frameworks, manage policy enrollment mechanics, and incorporate emerging technologies like LLMs.
The person in this role will define technical roadmaps, provide mentorship to engineers across various groups, and drive solutions through ambiguous problem spaces. Team members work globally to expand protection products smoothly into new regions without requiring ground-up redesigns for every individual market.
Responsibilities
- Design future-state architecture to expand AirCover into new geographic regions and products
- Lead the creation of an experimentation platform for insurance pricing, offers, and placement
- Guide engineers within and outside the immediate team to deliver solutions through ambiguity
- Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, designers, and legal partners to shape technical requirements
- Maintain high engineering standards spanning code reviews, system design, and production operations
- Mentor engineering personnel and act as a hands-on technical lead across multiple teams
- Incorporate emerging technologies such as large language models to automate and enhance user experiences
- Write and review code and architectural designs for distributed backend services operating at scale
Requirements
- 9+ years of relevant software development experience in a fast-paced technology environment, or 7+ years with an advanced degree
- Extensive background in backend systems within large-scale, service-oriented architectures
- Practical development experience using Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, or comparable programming languages
- Experience building multi-region or multi-tenant platforms utilizing rules-driven, configurable behavior
- Familiarity with A/B testing and experimentation systems to improve conversion rates
- Proficiency in operating high-performance systems featuring reliable logging and monitoring
- Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL
Qualifications
- Background in insurance, payments, fintech, or other regulated operational sectors
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
- Advanced degree in a related field
