Robinhood is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Storage Platform to shape the core infrastructure that drives database access across the company. Operating within a high-performance environment, the Storage Platform team manages thousands of relational and key-value databases alongside caching clusters, supporting critical brokerage workloads and millions of users with zero downtime permitted during market hours.
This role focuses on designing distributed storage systems, creating database proxy layers, building control plane automation, and enhancing multi-region disaster recovery. The position is well-suited for experienced engineers who excel in complex distributed systems and database internals. Work is performed in the Bellevue, Washington office with an in-person requirement of at least three days per week.
Compensation ranges vary by geographic zone. For Zone 1 locations such as Bellevue, WA, the base pay ranges from $230,000 to $270,000 USD, while other zones feature different base scales. Responsibilities
- Design and build distributed storage architectures, database proxies, and query routing systems
- Enhance disaster recovery, failover mechanisms, and availability across multi-region deployments
- Develop and maintain control plane automation to manage thousands of caching clusters and databases
- Analyze query patterns, optimize connection pooling, and implement observability standards to improve throughput
- Collaborate with infrastructure and product teams to standardize storage connectivity while meeting security and regulatory standards
Requirements
- Deep expertise in PostgreSQL with a strong grasp of relational database internals
- Demonstrated experience designing or operating distributed systems, including replication, horizontal sharding, and distributed transactions
- Proficiency in Rust and/or Go for building infrastructure or backend services
- Practical experience utilizing Kubernetes, AWS managed services like RDS and DynamoDB, and monitoring or observability tools
- Strong familiarity with performance tuning, production reliability, and cost optimization at high scale
