Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer focused on Tax Credits to join the team in New York. Operating on a hybrid schedule, this position involves designing, building, and refining software solutions that assist small businesses in discovering available tax credits and grants. Gusto serves over 500,000 businesses nationwide, providing essential platforms for payroll, benefits, and HR administration.
This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer who thrives on untangling complex problems and crafting streamlined, user-focused journeys. The Tax Credits team operates horizontally across the platform, giving the successful candidate an opportunity to collaborate closely with product management, design, data science, and platform engineering teams. Leadership and mentorship are core components of the position, requiring the capability to guide other engineers through large-scale refactors and complex technical domains.
Gusto expects all team members to actively incorporate relevant AI tools into their workflows. Candidates will work with large-scale applications utilizing technologies such as Ruby on Rails and React, helping to scale the platform while addressing system reliability and performance.
Responsibilities
- Design, construct, and test core software products
- Guide and mentor other engineers working in complex and large-scale technical domains
- Contribute to the scaling and maintenance of large Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications
- Partner with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to discover user pain points and launch features
- Manage multi-quarter engineering projects focused on delivering measurable customer impact
Requirements
- Have at least 8 years of professional software development experience
- Demonstrate experience in building scalable solutions that address customer needs
- Show proficiency with multi-quarter projects involving complex technical challenges
- Handle large-scale code refactors alongside performance and reliability issues
- Attend a mandatory two-day onboarding session at a company office
Qualifications
- Prior background or strong interest in working with Ruby on Rails
- Familiarity with leveraging artificial intelligence frameworks and tools to boost development and testing
- Experience operating within a collaborative, test-driven environment
