Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Tax Experiences team in San Francisco. Gusto provides a platform that manages payroll, health insurance, 401(k) plans, and human resources for over 500,000 small businesses across the United States. In this hybrid role, you will help eliminate tax complexities by developing intuitive features that handle tax collection, calculation, payment, and filing.
This position sits within a core group of engineers, product managers, data scientists, and designers responsible for the entire software stack. Your work will directly impact millions of business users by building sustainable systems that keep companies compliant. Responsibilities
- Execute technical strategy for the tax domain in alignment with team and group objectives
- Design, build, and test user experiences for adding and updating tax information
- Collaborate across engineering, product, design, data science, compliance, and operations
- Support software platforms powering first- and third-party products for millions of businesses
- Mentor fellow engineers to foster scalable and holistic technical solutions
- Drive product development from conception to launch
- Apply AI tools routinely within the engineering workflow and product design
- Identify and prioritize foundational architectural and systemic investments
Requirements
- Minimum of eight years of professional software engineering experience
- Expertise in React and TypeScript
- Experience with backend languages such as Ruby on Rails or SQL
- Familiarity with large, complex codebases and incremental improvement methods
- Ability to design and test scalable production-level code
- Commitment to two days of travel for onboarding at a company office
- Reliable and secure internet connection for remote work days
- Adherence to hybrid office attendance of approximately two to three days per week
