Job Description

Zoox is building a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi. The sustaining engineering group ensures long-term safety, reliability, availability, and serviceability across fleets operating at scale.

As a Sustaining Engineer focused on Body and Closure Systems, you will take independent ownership of sustaining engineering tasks for core subsystems on active production vehicles and the in-service fleet. You will lead root cause investigations, make critical technical choices, and steer modifications through design, validation, release, and fleet deployment. Your day-to-day work involves balancing priorities using fleet and production data to maximize uptime and manufacturing efficiency.

This position requires deep cooperation with Manufacturing, Vehicle Development, Service, Quality, Reliability, and external suppliers within a dynamic setting. You will guide issues from initial discovery to complete fleet-wide integration while addressing components such as latches, door systems, actuators, sealing, glazing, access panels, and body structures.

This opportunity fits professionals who thrive in fast-paced environments, excel at cross-functional communication, and want to shape the reliability of next-generation transportation systems. Equal opportunity employer considerations apply.

Responsibilities

  • Take charge of sustaining engineering and corrective action development for body and closure systems on current production and in-service vehicles
  • Resolve field and manufacturing problems end-to-end for door systems, actuators, latches, glazing, access panels, sealing, and body structures
  • Utilize fleet and production metrics like downtime drivers, MTBF, and repeat failure rates to prioritize tasks and measure solution effectiveness
  • Manage design enhancements to secure durability, robust performance, efficiency, and ease of service
  • Create and handle Engineering Change Requests and Change Actions alongside component, system, and vehicle validation plans
  • Direct retrofit and rework campaigns while collaborating with suppliers to boost reliability and resolve quality defects

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Bring 8 or more years of professional background working in EV, battery, thermal, or powertrain systems within sustaining, manufacturing, or product development settings
  • Show a proven track record of delivering subsystem-level corrective actions that enhance production vehicle serviceability, durability, reliability, or manufacturability
  • Possess practical expertise in DFMEA, root cause analysis, and product or process validation
  • Demonstrate strong communication and documentation abilities to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving, cross-functional organization

Qualifications

  • Background working with autonomous vehicles
  • Familiarity with Design for Service and Design for Manufacturing principles
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, Lean, or other continuous improvement frameworks
  • Competency in 3D CAD applications, with preference for CATIA
  • Experience using tools such as 3DX, DELMIA, SAP, Confluence, JIRA, SQL, Python, or data analysis and visualization dashboards
