Job Description
Cloudflare operates one of the largest global networks and provides services that protect and accelerate internet applications. Its customers range from individual site owners to Fortune 500 companies. The team's work centers on loading web pages inside remote browser instances, shielding users from threats and keeping browsing quick. This is a full-time Systems Engineer role on the Browser Isolation team.
The team works on a Chromium-derived browser engine, rendering and streaming pipelines, and the backend services that coordinate browser sessions across the network. Day to day, engineers handle changes to the browser, orchestrate services, add monitoring and maintain build tooling. The position draws on low-level systems work, distributed computing and security.
At this level, the person is responsible for dependable output on one component or area of work. Implementation decisions are made independently, with help requested when needed, and broader knowledge of the system grows over time. The posting notes that leading an organization-wide architecture effort is not a requirement. After onboarding, the engineer joins the production on-call rotation and may be contacted outside normal hours.
The listing is marked remote, while the posting names Austin, TX (US) as an available location. No earlier experience with Browser Isolation or Cloudflare is needed. Measured improvements matter here: the team works to make sessions steadier, speed up startup, reduce lag during use and use fewer resources.
Responsibilities
- Take well-defined features from design and coding through testing, release and post-launch follow-up, with senior colleagues available for guidance.
- Write and maintain C++ for the Chromium-based browser, and contribute code to Go, Rust and TypeScript services.
- Locate faults spanning browser processes, Linux machines and distributed services with logs, metrics, traces and profilers.
- Make sessions steadier, startup faster, interaction snappier and resource use leaner, and confirm each gain with measurements.
- Produce maintainable code, automated tests and design documents, and take part in code and design reviews.
- Work with teammates and partner groups, flag trade-offs and blockers early, and respond to feedback.
- After onboarding, join the production on-call rotation and help with incident response and follow-up fixes.
Qualifications
- Hands-on C++ skills, including memory ownership, object lifetimes and concurrency.
- Comfort with Linux and UNIX basics: processes, threads, networking and diagnostic tooling.
- Solid grounding in common data structures, algorithmic thinking and the design of software.
- Past work with distributed systems, covering communication between services, timeouts, retries and partial failures.
- Capable of learning an unfamiliar codebase, splitting problems into steps, and testing both correct and failure behavior.
- Evidence-driven approach to debugging and tuning performance.
- Eagerness to pick up Rust, Go, TypeScript and the remaining tools in use.
- Plus: browser engine or sandbox work, low-latency streaming or graphics, Nomad or Kubernetes, production Rust or Go, WebRTC, Skia, WebAssembly, WebGL, and production monitoring or incident response.
