Job Description
Cloudflare runs DNS infrastructure that is among the largest in the world. It supplies authoritative DNS to millions of internet properties and runs the public resolver known as 1.1.1.1. The company reports that its authoritative and resolver platforms together field around 3 trillion queries each day.
This full-time Systems Engineer role sits on the DNS team, which builds and runs both services along with the tooling that publishes records, rolls out changes and handles query traffic worldwide. The DNS systems are custom built in-house, and the team keeps iterating to meet new requirements for scale and reliability.
Projects of moderate-to-substantial size are handled by this engineer, from early design to completion, usually with some oversight. The role serves as a contact point for those projects and helps make the systems more resilient and better architected. It also includes mentoring junior engineers through code and design reviews, and contributing to product requirement documents with product and other stakeholders.
The listing is marked remote, while the posting names Austin, TX as an available location. DNS experience is welcome but not required. The posting lists a bachelor's degree in computing or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Responsibilities
- Keep DNS infrastructure running and growing, including building customer-facing features.
- Produce code that is clean, thoroughly tested and easier to maintain, simplifying the systems over time.
- Become the go-to expert on moderately complex systems and field questions about your projects.
- Spot team-wide problems early and recommend fixes for processes and technology.
- Offer input on product requirement documents alongside product managers and other stakeholders.
- Guide and onboard newer engineers through careful code and design reviews.
- Troubleshoot hard service problems with little help, and strengthen reliability through refactoring and redesign.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in computing, a related discipline, or comparable hands-on experience.
- Solid grounding in systems programming, covering performance, concurrency and networking.
- Able to ship production software in Rust or Go, or has a history of quickly learning a similar language.
- Tends to measure before tuning and thinks through how things might fail.
- Takes responsibility for work after merging, including release steps, observability, on-call duty and post-release fixes.
- Has driven projects to completion and scoped work for others.
- Extra credit: leading team meetings or technical talks, writing docs or speaking, interviewing candidates, open source work, DNSSEC and related DNS security extensions, and HTTP, TLS and CDN knowledge.
