Zoox seeks a Team Lead for Ground Operations on the 3rd shift to direct overnight fleet maintenance, rework, and mission readiness activities. In this role, the selected candidate will ensure maximum vehicle uptime and availability for daytime operations by optimizing workflows during low-demand overnight hours. Key responsibilities include leading a team of vehicle technicians and readiness associates, driving workshop safety, managing schedules, and serving as a technical escalation point. The position operates on a Sunday through Thursday schedule from 10:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

The position involves coordinating across multiple mission readiness and base operations locations as operations scale, requiring local and national travel capability up to twenty percent of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and mentorship to technical staff and contract personnel on the overnight shift
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train workshop personnel while building a culture of accountability and safety
  • Manage employee and contractor schedules including time-off requests
  • Track performance metrics and provide consistent feedback to the crew
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and apply lean methodologies to improve operational efficiency
  • Lead overnight vehicle maintenance and rework to maximize daytime fleet availability
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical issues and ensure adherence to quality standards
  • Analyze, document, and report fleet data to support root cause analysis on vehicle and component issues
  • Enforce health, safety, and OSHA guidelines in a clean and organized workshop environment
  • Deploy correct software and firmware to vehicles ahead of morning operations
  • Direct vehicle intake, execute pre-mission checks, and complete readiness checklists
  • Supervise vehicle logistical movement and storage for smooth shift transitions
  • Manually operate autonomous and auxiliary vehicles for yard logistics and readiness workflows
  • Support fleet operations across multiple regional sites as operations scale

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on automotive technician experience
  • 2+ years of people leadership or supervisory experience
  • Ability and willingness to lead overnight operations on the 3rd shift
  • Working schedule availability from Sunday to Thursday, 10pm to 6am
  • Extensive knowledge of automotive maintenance methods, diagnostic tools, parts, CAN/LIN architecture, wiring diagrams, and soldering
  • Ability to quickly master new technical subjects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical details for various stakeholders
  • Capability to manage time, multitask, and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally up to 20%

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or business field
  • Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair
  • Strong understanding of electric vehicle architecture and high-voltage systems
