Zoox is seeking a Vehicle Test Technician for its Base Operations team on the first shift. This position involves setting up, executing, and reporting on evaluations for research and development robots, alongside maintaining the public roads fleet for active use. Professionals in this role will plan assessments, install necessary monitoring gear, configure automobiles to precise specifications, and execute diagnostic and repair work to keep vehicles safe and demo-ready. The testing scope includes vehicle performance, crash tests, noise and vibration, thermal performance, durability, and prototype validation.
This opportunity suits individuals with a solid background in automotive repair who enjoy hands-on troubleshooting, equipment setup, and collaborating with engineering teams. Candidates must be comfortable working a Tuesday through Saturday schedule from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, and able to travel between 10 to 20 percent of the time locally, nationally, and occasionally internationally. The job requires maintaining shop spaces to high safety and cleanliness standards while delivering a strong service experience to internal partners.
Responsibilities
- Execute vehicle-level test requests accurately and thoroughly while creating diagnostic test plans when necessary
- Collaborate with engineering staff to choose and install test sensors and configure DAQ systems
- Prepare test parts, update test vehicles, and coordinate logistics for equipment, vehicles, and parts
- Configure, maintain, diagnose, and sign off on vehicles for safe on-road use by performing inspections and repairs
- Escalate diagnostic issues to engineering teams and coordinate the repair process
- Coordinate with the Shop Foreman to verify vehicles meet demonstration and testing requirements
- Perform tests, gather data, support reporting and documentation, and maintain service records and quality field reports
- Keep workshops, tools, and parts inventory organized according to high safety and efficiency standards
Requirements
- Minimum of four years of automotive technician experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of automotive repair and diagnostic procedures, tools, and components
- Strong understanding of electrical theory and application
- Experience working with test equipment in areas such as NVH, Vehicle Dynamics, Thermal, Powertrain, Chassis, Restraint Systems, or Durability
- Ability to travel locally, nationally, and occasionally internationally between 10 to 20 percent of the time
- Ability to pass a background check, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen
- Possession of a valid driver license with a clean driving record
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and sit or stand for extended periods of eight or more hours
- Ability to operate a forklift or gantry
- Requirement to wear safety boots conforming to ASTM F2412 or F2413 standards
Qualifications
- Experience in an automotive-focused engineering or research lab such as a dyno or battery lab
- Experience with instrumentation, test setup, and DAQ operation
- Experience with CAN or LIN, wiring diagrams, wiring repair, and soldering
- Experience with vehicle alignments and necessary adjustments
- Experience with ADAS or autonomous platforms
- Ability to tow a car hauler and other large trailers for fleet vehicle transport
- Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair
- Ability to mentor and coach teammates
