Job Description
Zoox is seeking a Wireless Firmware Validation Engineer to join its Firmware team on a hybrid schedule. The company is building a custom autonomous vehicle fleet along with an urban mobility-as-a-service ecosystem. In this position, you will take ownership of performance testing, optimization, and debugging for the Telematics Control Unit (TCU). You will evaluate interactions between third-party hardware and the autonomous platform across 4G and 5G cellular modems, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and internal software layers. This role suits professionals who want to bridge hardware, cloud infrastructure, and test systems while safeguarding the reliability of an autonomous fleet.
Your daily focus will involve identifying cellular edge cases, analyzing diagnostic logs, and executing testing campaigns using industry-standard network emulators. You will design integration plans from initial hardware bring-up through large-scale fleet deployment, investigate complex system logs, and ensure that RF-baseband, protocol stacks, and host interfaces are properly validated. By creating automated frameworks and reviewing integration design specifications, you will help guarantee that the vehicle connectivity infrastructure meets rigorous operational demands.
Responsibilities
- Define component integration strategies ranging from early hardware bring-up to fleet-scale deployment
- Design and execute test plans covering the development lifecycle
- Utilize network emulation tools such as the Keysight UXM to uncover edge cases and performance vulnerabilities
- Investigate challenging cross-functional logs to determine root causes and propose balanced architectural solutions
- Validate interfaces between the RF-baseband, baseband-protocol stack, and host
- Build and maintain automation scripts and log frameworks to analyze wireless behavior at scale
- Review and author software, firmware, and integration design specifications
Requirements
- 10 or more years of professional experience in wireless validation or embedded systems test engineering
- Expertise in creating test plans for 3GPP cellular, Wi-Fi, and satellite features, as well as debugging protocol layers
- Extensive knowledge of LTE and 5G protocol stacks and 3GPP specifications
- Proficiency in cellular network analysis tools including QXDM, Shannon Tools, and Wireshark
- Hands-on background with network emulators such as Keysight UXM and Rohde & Schwarz CMW500 or CMX500
- Strong coding skills in Python or Shell scripting for test automation frameworks
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field
- Familiarity with additional wireless technologies like Bluetooth and BLE
- Experience testing software within an embedded Linux or Yocto Project environment
- Background in autonomous vehicles, IoT, or telematics domains
- Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvements and mentor peers
