Shoprite Jobs: How to Apply for Store and Youth Posts (2026)

To apply for a Shoprite store job, send a WhatsApp message to 087 240 5709 and choose “Job Opportunities”. That is the official channel listed on the Shoprite Group careers page for store posts across its supermarket, furniture, financial and cellular operations. Applying is free: Shoprite says it will never charge you to apply for a job, so anyone asking for money is not recruiting for the Group.
The Shoprite Group (which also runs Checkers, Usave, Medirite and Petshop Science) is South Africa’s largest private-sector employer. In its results for the 52 weeks ended 28 June 2026, the Group reported more than 174 000 employees, 5 491 direct new jobs and 232 net new stores. More stores means steady entry-level hiring, but also a lot of fake “Shoprite vacancy” adverts. This guide explains the real routes in, what to prepare and how to stay safe.
Which jobs does the Shoprite Group hire for?
Most openings are in stores, and many entry-level posts suit people with a matric and a willingness to learn. Typical supermarket roles include:
Cashiers and till packers
Shelf packers and merchandisers
Bakery, deli, butchery and fresh-produce assistants
General assistants and receiving clerks
Supervisors, department managers and store managers (with experience)
The Group also hires for divisional and home office roles (finance, HR, logistics, IT) and for ShopriteX, its technology and data team in Cape Town. These usually ask for a tertiary qualification and relevant experience.
How to apply for Shoprite store jobs: step by step
Save the official number. Add 087 240 5709 to your phone. This is the store-jobs number published on shopriteholdings.co.za.
Send a WhatsApp message. Say “Hi” and select Job Opportunities from the menu.
Follow the prompts and answer honestly. Give accurate personal details, your area and the type of work you want. Make sure your phone number is correct, because that is how you will be contacted.
Choose stores close to home. The Group’s recruitment platform matches candidates to nearby stores. Its stated target is to hire people who live within 15 km of a store, and the average distance is about 7 km. Applying near where you live improves your chances and cuts your transport costs.
Keep your phone on and check messages. Shortlisted candidates are contacted about assessments or interviews. Reply quickly and confirm any appointment.
Prepare for the interview. Bring your ID, matric certificate (if you have one) and a short CV. Be ready to talk about reliability, customer service and working weekends and public holidays.
Applying for head office and specialist roles
For office, management and technology posts, start at the careers section of shopriteholdings.co.za and follow the links for the role you want. Tailor your CV to the job advert and keep copies of your qualifications ready to upload. Our South African CV format guide shows what local recruiters expect.
Youth programmes: a way in with no experience
If you are an unemployed South African aged 18 to 34, the Group runs two youth routes alongside normal hiring:
Retail Readiness Programme (RRP): a short course (seven weeks, according to the Group’s published description) that teaches basic retail skills and leads to an NQF level 3 part-qualification. Many graduates are later offered jobs.
Youth Employment Service (YES): 12 months of on-the-job training in departments such as bakery, deli and fresh foods. In its 2026 results, the Group said it spent R102 million on 2 880 YES participants.
Intakes open at different times, so check the Youth Opportunities page on shopriteholdings.co.za regularly. For how the national programme works, read our guide to the YES programme and how to apply.
What to prepare before you apply
A valid South African ID or smart ID card
Your matric certificate or latest school results (if available)
A one- or two-page CV with a working cellphone number and email
Names and numbers of one or two references (a teacher, volunteer coordinator or previous employer)
Clear availability, including weekends, month-end and public holidays
No experience yet? Volunteer work, church or school responsibilities and informal jobs all count. See our list of jobs with matric and no experience for other employers that hire beginners.
What will you earn?
Pay depends on the role, store and hours, and the Group does not publish a single pay scale for store staff. By law, no worker may earn less than the national minimum wage, which has been R30.23 per ordinary hour since 1 March 2026. Our minimum wage guide for 2026 explains how this works for full-time and part-time workers.
How to spot fake Shoprite job adverts
Scammers copy the Shoprite name because it is so well known. Walk away if you see any of these:
A request for money: for “registration”, uniforms, training, medicals or to “secure” a post. Shoprite says it never charges people to apply.
A WhatsApp number other than 087 240 5709 claiming to handle store applications
Facebook pages or groups that are not Shoprite’s verified accounts
Promises of a guaranteed job, unusually high pay or an “interview” that skips any assessment
Requests for your banking PIN, OTPs or Xtra Savings card details
If you are unsure, check the advert against the official careers page and report suspicious pages to Shoprite through its official social media accounts. We explain how similar scams work in our report on the fake SAPS recruitment WhatsApp scam.
