Coinbase is hiring an Associate General Counsel, Privacy to join its Privacy Legal team on a remote basis. Reporting directly to the Managing General Counsel, this position operates globally to provide senior legal advice concerning privacy and data protection across the organization. The selected professional will bridge product development, data governance, and regulatory strategy to help build privacy-focused products within a dynamic industry.

This role suits an experienced attorney who thrives in an intense environment and wants to shape global privacy programs. Team members participate in remote-first operations while gathering quarterly for collaborative in-person working sessions known as surges. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Privacy Operations, Product Counsel, Engineering, and Security teams to translate complex global requirements into clear guidance and handle regulatory inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the design, implementation, and scaling of the global privacy program alongside Privacy Operations, handling policy creation, data protection agreements, and transparency reports
  • Direct cross-functional privacy projects covering data governance, tooling, and data subject rights processes with Customer Experience, Engineering, and international groups
  • Collaborate with Product and Commercial Counsel to integrate privacy-by-design concepts into product launches and provide actionable guidance
  • Manage company responses to privacy incidents, regulatory questions, and law enforcement requests alongside Security and Trust & Risk
  • Direct external privacy communications and interact directly with data protection authorities and government regulators globally and across the EMEA region

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of practice as an attorney, with at least 5 years focused specifically on substantive privacy matters, including previous in-house roles at financial services or technology companies
  • Juris Doctor or an international equivalent degree, plus qualification as a lawyer in the UK, Ireland, or an EU jurisdiction
  • Extensive knowledge of international and EU privacy laws such as GDPR, PIPEDA, LGPD, and CCPA/CPRA, alongside state data breach notification rules
  • Demonstrated background in leading multi-functional privacy initiatives across Legal, Engineering, Security, Operations, and Product departments
  • Experience drafting and negotiating vendor information security terms, data protection agreements, and privacy policies while answering inquiries from consumer and data protection regulators
  • Ability to responsibly utilize generative AI with human oversight to improve workflow quality, efficiency, and cost
