GitLab is looking for a Backend Engineer to join its AI Engineering organization and support the Duo Chat group remotely. In this full-time role, you will build and maintain the agentic runtime behind GitLab Duo Chat, focusing on Python development, LangGraph flows, the Flow Registry, and the Duo Workflow Service. You will also connect the chat functionality with the GitLab Rails monolith and GraphQL API.
This position is well-suited for backend engineers who have experience with Python and want to work on cutting-edge generative and agentic artificial intelligence applications. You will collaborate asynchronously with a globally distributed team of specialists, receiving mentorship from senior and staff engineers while managing your own workload independently.

Responsibilities
- Develop secure, performant, and well-tested features for GitLab Duo Chat
- Implement and extend agentic flows in Python using LangGraph
- Integrate chat capabilities with the GitLab Rails monolith and its GraphQL API
- Write maintainable code and include tests with every merge request
- Review code according to established guidelines and respond to external contributions
- Identify technical debt and propose efficiency improvements
- Partner with Product Management, User Experience, and Frontend team members
- Participate in Tier 2 or Tier 3 on-call rotations to support product and security operations
Requirements
- Professional experience building and testing production services in Python
- Working proficiency in Ruby on Rails or a strong willingness to learn it
- Interest in or exposure to large language models, prompting, tool calling, and evaluation
- Experience designing and building APIs with performance optimization skills
- Commitment to secure coding practices and security-minded development
- Strong written communication skills suited for an asynchronous, remote work environment
Qualifications
- Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or comparable agent orchestration frameworks
- Familiarity with GraphQL and RSpec
- Prior experience using or contributing to the GitLab product
- Background working on globally distributed remote teams
